2019 Music & Entertainment

Thanks to all of our fabulous entertainers in 2019!!
Those sweet tunes and good vibes still reverberate in our hearts!!

Nicholas Penn featuring Seth Murphy, cellist of Bear Medicine
Songwriting has been a passion for Nicholas Penn for 13 years.  Over the years he has written hundreds of songs and developed his own personal style, flare, and lyrical themes.  Seth Murphy has worked with many performing groups in Lexington, and pushes traditional notions of how to use the cello.  One of his current projects is Bear Medicine.  Together, Nick and Seth have created Alive Music. Each Alive Music experience is 99% improvised and spontaneous, making each musical experience unique.  Together their energy is the perfect example of the DIY, skill-building, make-your-own-gathering spirit of Whippoorwill.

Michael & Carrie Kline
As a performing duet, the Klines mingle stirring harmonies with interweaving guitar runs and cross-chording to produce an authentic sound that captures and conveys the spirit of the people and mountains they love to sing about. From ancient ballads passed down through a score of generations to current songs of struggle in the coalfields, they address mountain music as social history expressing a level of truth seldom available on the printed page.

There's not a much better way to spend an evening in Kentucky than a sunset over wavy hills. Add Chelsea Nolan to that mix and one would be hard pressed to mistake that for anything but Kentucky. Chelsea Nolan's "Sugar Holler" screams familiarity. Chelsea makes us all long for those nights. Once we're there, we never want to leave.

Sara Hutchinson is a multi-instrumentalist who has performed prolifically since the age of fifteen.  While earning her Master's Degree in Spanish Lit, she began to compose in Spanish as well.  Her vocal style is rich and developed, boasting a powerful register and truly remarkable range and pitch control. Her solo repertoire is accompanied by sweet finger-picking, and touches on themes from the sentimental to the silly.  In addition to performing her own creations, she writes for other artists as well, including Riley Resa.  Find her most recent artpiece "Time Machine- Sara Hutchinson" on YouTube and Spotify, and be sure to subscribe to her channel for upcoming releases.

Capoeira, known as the martial art of the kick and sweep, is an
Afro-Brazilian originated way of life developed from the oppression of slavery.  The fighting style of Capoeira, disguised as a dance, is a rhythmic display of constant movement followed by tricky, beautiful, and swift fighting force.
We are a capoeira group in Lexington Kentucky. Classes are taught by Pega Pega and Bico de Balanca under the supervision of Mastre Gildo Valu.
