If you’re looking to live a more simple life as a self-sustaining being, the Whippoorwill Festival near Berea is the place for you.

The festival, organized by Dave Cooper, celebrated its fourth anniversary this weekend at HomeGrown HideAways, 11 miles east of Berea. Sessions began Thursday and conclude today.

It included sessions to teach attendees new techniques in self-sustainability. Participants also have opportunities to connect personally and be of help to each other, skills they are encouraged to use in their own communities...

How do you describe the Whippoorwill Festival? It is part Scout camp, part folkways festival and part family reunion, straight out of the pages of the old Whole Earth Catalog. However it's described, the third annual event attracted more than 300 people from across the region to rural Madison County last weekend. They came for 3½ days of camping, communal eating, conversation, education, music, dancing and fun in a family-friendly atmosphere...

It's July 20th, 2013 and I have been home for a week but I can still see those barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight to the music of the “Coon Creek Girls”. Bluegrass music in a Kentucky “holler” somewhere southeast of Lexington. Writing about what I saw and experienced  might seem an easy task. This has not proven to be the case but I will try. You see the “Whippoorwill Festival” was in fact a checkpoint for me. A time of reflection and evaluation. A renewal of sorts almost like lent. I may be living and working for the “man” but part of me is back in that Kentucky “holler”...
